TOUR REVIEWS

“Maxim Lando is a soloist who never treats virtuosity as an end in itself, but places it in the service of musical storytelling. His tone shifted effortlessly between lyrical intimacy and crystalline brilliance; even the most dazzling passages retain line and dramatic logic.

The ending felt like an unleashed yet controlled apotheosis—the audience responded with enthusiastic applause, which Lando further ignited with highly virtuosic encores.”

- Guido Krawinkel, Feuilletonscout – Wiesbaden Kurhaus

“Lando is a firebrand in the best sense: a shaper at the piano who works with breathtaking precision and tireless power. He looked beyond the notes, uncovering wit and subtle irony in Liszt’s virtuosic escapades, and captivated the audience with a wide-ranging dynamic palette.

His interaction with the orchestra’s devoted principal cellist, in particular, created moments of pure bliss in which time seemed to stand still.

In the furious finale, soloist and orchestra drove each other to new heights. The applause was boundless. Lando responded with two encores: a technically dazzling Horowitz paraphrase on Bizet’s Carmen and Nikolai Medtner’s Fairy Tale, Op. 20 No. 1, which brought the hall to a boil.

- Dirk Schauß, Online Merker - Frankfurt Alte Oper

“American Maxim Lando is a brilliant virtuoso who rises above all technical challenges. With absolute precision and a powerful touch, he moved across the keyboard, mastering block chords and rapid chains of notes at breathtaking tempos, enchanting with feather-light trills and gliding through ornamental figures in the treble with the lightness of a butterfly.

In two encores, including a paraphrase on Bizet’s Carmen by Vladimir Horowitz, the magnificent virtuoso once again demonstrated his effortless command of the instrument. Technically, this young man can truly do anything.”

- Kirsten Liese, Klassik begeistert – Frankfurt Alte Oper

“Maxim Lando in the footsteps of the “Last Romantic”: Lando’s approach places him in the niche of the “Last Romantic” - reminiscent of Vladimir Horowitz who cultivated a similar touch combined with extraordinary virtuosity.”

- Jürgen Pathy, Klassik begeistert – Munich Herkulessaal

“By the time the remarkably gifted pianist Maxim Lando—only 23 years old—took the stage, all lingering doubts had already been swept away. The American illuminated Franz Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto with breathtaking beauty,

In the encores, Lando practically danced across the keys. The Variations Op. 41 by the Ukrainian composer Nikolai Kapustin were virtuosic. His improvisations on Led Zeppelin’s legendary earworm “Stairway to Heaven” were surprising and refreshingly new.”
